Test Measurement

The Liver Function Test (LFT) measures the concentration of liver enzymes, proteins, and bilirubin in the blood to evaluate liver health and performance. The results are expressed in specific units such as U/L (units per liter) for enzymes and g/dL (grams per deciliter) or mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter) for proteins and bilirubin. Typical reference ranges are as follows (may vary slightly by lab): Total Bilirubin: 0.2–1.2 mg/dL Direct Bilirubin: 0.0–0.3 mg/dL SGOT (AST): 8–40 U/L SGPT (ALT): 7–56 U/L Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP): 44–147 U/L Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT): 9–48 U/L Total Protein: 6.0–8.3 g/dL Albumin: 3.5–5.2 g/dL Globulin: 2.0–3.5 g/dL A/G Ratio: 1.0–2.5 These measurements help identify liver inflammation, damage, or functional abnormalities, providing a complete picture of hepatic health.

What is the Test Used For?

The Liver Function Test (LFT) interpretation helps assess how well the liver is performing its vital functions, including protein synthesis, detoxification, and bile production. Elevated SGOT (AST) and SGPT (ALT) levels indicate liver cell injury or inflammation, as seen in hepatitis or fatty liver. High Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) and Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) levels suggest bile duct obstruction or alcohol-related liver damage. Increased Total and Direct Bilirubin levels indicate jaundice or impaired bilirubin metabolism. Low Albumin or Total Protein levels may point to chronic liver disease or malnutrition. An abnormal Albumin/Globulin (A/G) ratio can indicate liver dysfunction or immune-related conditions. Overall, deviations from normal LFT values help in diagnosing liver inflammation, damage, or bile obstruction, and guide further medical evaluation and treatment.
